Take Action

Pownal Elementary School needs your support. Here is how you can help.

Sign the Withdrawal Petition

A withdrawal petition is currently circulating in Pownal. Signing the petition starts the statutory process under Maine law (§1466).

What happens after signing:

  1. Petition (current step) — requires signatures from registered voters
  2. Town authorization vote — Pownal voters decide whether to begin formal withdrawal
  3. Negotiation period — terms of withdrawal are negotiated between Pownal and RSU 5
  4. State review — the Maine Commissioner of Education reviews the agreement
  5. Final referendum — every registered Pownal voter decides yes or no

Nothing is final until that last vote. But the full process must be completed by November 2026, and every step takes time.
